Weight Loss Challenges

A recent study carried out in Montreal, using a computer model, highlighted the fact that obesity is directly related to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We know this already but it also, quite specifically showed, that being overweight shortens the life by 8 years and can cause approximately 20 years of related bad health in addition. Conditions like heart disease and diabetes deprive people of years of healthy living and cause premature death. The main finding was that being overweight affects the youngest, the most. This study is published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal. More information can be found on the NHS Choices website.

The research is based on the results of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and looked at excess weight and its relationship with years of life and the quality of years of healthy/ unhealthy life, in those who were overweight and between the ages of 20 and 79.

The youngest were the worst off with the number of overweight people dying, decreasing with age. Furthermore, young adults who were overweight experienced greater losses in relation to healthy years. The younger you are, the greater the impact on your health in terms of both life expectancy and a healthy life, without the suffering of chronic illness.

Here is Europe we have a very limited range of weight loss treatments but for Xenical a lipase inhibitor that works in the gut. It does not work for everyone, and success with the drug still requires the adoption of a healthy diet and regular exercise regime. There is nothing in the way of appetite suppressants like there is in the US but for Mysimba, an impressive drug that just might make it here. It will be a few months yet before we know how close we are to a market authorisation but it looks like it will be some point in 2015 - probably the summer. You can check out www.theonlineclinic.co.uk for more information as this is the only clinic in Google that appears to be preparing to prescribe this weight loss medication..

Even with this appetite suppressant, it is recommended that a healthy diet is consumed simultaneously, along with a daily exercise regime. It has to be the only way out of the obesity hole. Schools need to be educating children about the dangers of becoming overweight and the corresponding risk of death. Weight is so much associated with being size zero these days that we are all forgetting there is a greater issue. People are already dying from this and will continue to, as will the obesity rates themselves- which are soaring year in, year out.

Without sufficient treatments in place but for expensive and invasive bariatric surgeries, the only option is a total overhaul in lifestyle choices.
